[BKARTS] Book Board identification

Can anyone identify this book board, and of what it might be comprised?

The boards come from an early C20th Shakespeare, which is being recased. The cloth has been stripped off, revealing boards which are pitch black in color, about 1.5 mm thick, very flexible, no apparent grain. They have a coarse appearance and a surface feel of bitumin. They burn and bubble up with a flame, with the faint smell of an early plastic. Looks like a fibrous substance impregnated with tar.

Doesa anyone know of this board?

David
