Re: [BKARTS] Printing on vellum

In this case, vellum is thought of as parchment or an limed animal hide, opposite of tanning.

Vellum as a word for parchment was used, as the finely scraped calf parchment of unborn calfs ressambled a new paper on the market (handmade) at that period, which was called velin as it had a smooth surface.

Most skins used are called Parchments or pergament (german)

To print- we assume letterpress - you need a finely toothed surface and a stiff, pigmentloaded ink, no drier.

The Bigus book recollect the notes of the Likes like Kelmscott and doves press who have all at one time or another printed on vellum.

Vellum can in most cases be printed on by inkjet printers with no problem (depending on the printer) but that's a slow process. For laser printing and other types, the most important thing (as far as I know) is the actual vellum itself. There are certain vellums that cannot be printed on and some that are printer safe (the won't melt in the printer). Otherwise, I've printed on vellum myself several times with no problems. It'll usualy say on the vellum package or box whether it's safe for printing on, and othersise, you load it into the printer just like paper. Hope that's helpful at least a little.

How were (are) books printed on vellum? What inks were used and how different was it (is it) from printing on paper?
