Re: [BKARTS] strange typo in recent books from Latin America



I did find references to its being solely in commercial documents;
hence the common name "commercial a."  Inasmuch as I read very few
medieval commercial documents--I go more for fouages and similar
tax records that specify the names--I can see how I missed it.  I
do think that his original statement was a bit stronger than he could
support and certainly unrelated to the strange use described.

I don't think the sender of the original message(s) claimed that the use 
of the @ was ever common in long ago times.  But according to what I 
read in the website I sent to this list, it did occur in old (ca1600) 
documents in the Romance languages, especially Italian.
