Crossed Structure Binding
with Juliayn Coleman

Everyone loves a puzzle. Crossword, sudoku, tumbling blocks, logic puzzles . . . that Eureka moment when it all fits together is so rewarding. Well, why not make a puzzle that results in a beautiful hand-bound leather journal at the end? The solution to the crossed structures is just the beginning of your relationship with this clever little volume. In this class, you will make on of these handy, durable books, and receive instructions for seven of the known variations. You will also learn of its origins as a gentle, unassuming, conservationally utilitarian structure developed by one of the world’s hippest conservators. Open to all skill levels.

Introduction to Artists’ Books
with Jen Thomas

So what exactly is an artist’s book? Well, artists’ books continue to defy definition and often take many different forms – altered books, sculptural books, one-of-a-kind objects, beautifully printed and bound multiples. They remain a fantastically creative form for artistic expression and visual communication. In this class students will be introduced to several basic book structures and image transfer techniques that they can then build upon to create their own artists’ books. Students will be encouraged to view the book as a conceptual space and create an artist’s book every week to fully explore the medium. Leave any preconceived notions at the door. No previous bookbinding experience is necessary.
Class size is limited to 8 participants

Three Non-Adhesive Binding
with Juliayn Coleman

Let’s go back, shall we? Back to a time when everything was made better and things worked the way they should. A time when books were all sewn through the fold and peace and harmony reigned through Alexander’s empire. In this class, we shall go back to that time, not just to satisfy our nostalgic impulses, but to learn some pretty cool methods for making books that have heartily laughed in the face of Time. They are still ideal structures for photo albums, portfolios, journals, family memoirs, and chapbooks. Open to all skill levels.

Bookmaking & Creative Writing for Teachers

with Leah Mayers

This class is for teachers who want their students to love books – both inside and out. Leah works with art teachers who want to incorporate writing into their curriculum, and/or elementary and secondary teachers who want to enhance the teaching of literacy through making books and writing poetry. Teachers will walk away with samples of multiple structures that will be easy to incorporate into regular classrooms as well as art rooms. Leah’s own work as a teacher helps her structure projects that work within the constraints of a real world classroom. Here’s a chance to explore your own creativity rather than grading someone else’s.
