GOTHIC BOOK WORKSHOP
September 20-21 & 27-28; Sat-Sun 10:00am-6:00pm

Jim Croft of Oldways Book Arts Tools returns! A Bison Workshop favorite, master
bookbinder Jim Croft will guide us in constructing an authentic Medieval or Gothic Book,
originally created before and during the time of Gutenberg, circa 1300– 1500 AD. Many
original books from this era continue to survive in good condition. This truly remarkable
style of book is distinguished by carved wooden covers, double cord sewing and a tooled
leather spine.

All skill and experience levels are welcome and everyone should be able to complete a
book during the two-weekend class.

The cost of this workshop is $225 per person, plus $85 materials fee. Price includes
snacks and lunch for each day. Enrollment fees can be paid by credit card or check at
Bison, or by credit card over the phone. This workshop is limited to 8 people, so please
make your booking as early as possible to ensure your spot.

WOOD TYPE POSTERS
October 10-12; Fri 7:00pm-9:00pm, Sat-Sun 10:00am-6:00pm

Bison's letterpress wood type posters are a sight to behold around Bellingham. Ever
wanted to make your own? Now you can! Bring an idea—it can be a show poster, a poem,
a love letter, a gift, an abstract art piece—and print an edition of 30 posters.

You'll learn the basics of setting images and wood type on a Vandercook press, as well as
inking the press and cleanup. Participants will have access to Bison's extensive collection
of local historic photo engravings and dozens of wood fonts from the 1800s. We'll cover
the basics of carving linoleum for relief printing, take a look at poster history, and discuss
different kinds of papers suitable for printing. Prior printing experience helpful but not
required.

Each participant will leave with a portfolio of posters, and the skills to rent time on the
press for future projects.

The cost of this workshop is $120 per person, plus $45 materials fee. Price includes
snacks and lunch for each day. Enrollment fees can be paid by credit card or check at
Bison, or by credit card over the phone. This workshop is limited to 6 people, so please
make your booking as early as possible to ensure your spot.
