Re: [BKARTS] Copyright

I tend to agree. There is no reproduction of copyrighted work, just reselling. The rebinding is a "value-add" to the work that has already been paid for. The additional value is not the content or any alteration of it but rather the binder's work. Think of it as an elaborate repair job on a book that is not in need of repair. An author would not receive additional royalties on a book that is repaired. The thought of anyone even suggesting litigating such a modification on grounds of copyright is highly unlikely.

Another thought, I discussed this issue with some artist friends and one of
them mentioned that the project seemed more akin to purchasing a painting,
reframing it and reselling it. This of course is perfectly legal, does not
infringe on copyright of the artist, and is common practice in the art
world, including cleaning and refinishing the painting with more modern
protective coatings by some dealers.

But since the author is not responsible for the format of the book, and
has
no authorship of the format, I do wonder how this could be upheld by
any
court. So far, it's untested.

Graham Moss (publisher, and designer of books, who thus owns the
copyright
of the format).
