Re: [BKARTS] Table of Book Sizes (was: folio and quarto volume questions)



May I say that those of us who regard the actual printing format of a
book as a key element of its identity with an edition or issue are not
fond of these conventional size designations, which all too often differ
from the reality. (That is to say, "Don't do this at home": if you can't
determine the real format, it's much better to give a register of the
signatures, or at least something like "in 8's", with a leaf
measurement.)

Leave "royal octavo" and "imperial quarto" to the advertisements of
long-dead publishers and their bibliographical instruments--the
interpretation of which is greatly facilitated by tables like those on
Steve Trussel's site. But was this inquiry in fact more concerned with
interpreting than with using this system? I don't mean to accuse ...
