I would think that possible acidity would also depend on the degree of substitution in the cellulose polymer - it differs from normal cellulose in that some quantity of the -OH groups in the cellulose have been manipulated into -OCH3 groups and there's a range of possible substitution values.

I think that some people are unaware of the different types --- the shorter molecular type is best used for sizing as it will penetrate the fibers, whereas the longer molecular type might be used as an adhesive as it will basically sit on the surface of the fibers.
