Never. The only time the MC is warm is in mixing. I'll take about a quarter
of the total volume of water, heat that up to stir in the MC (doesn't swell
in hot water) and then top off with cold stirring the whole time so it's
nice and smooth.

Paste that is still warm "dilute" very nicely. What I've done if it's
already cooled is put it through a blender. MC doesn't solidify the same
way.

I find that mixing paste with PVA works better when the paste is still warm
(not hot)--anyone else had this experience?

Peter, did you ever try warming the methyl cellulose before mixing with PVA?
