Kaufman, Margaret , Illustrated by: Claire Van Vliet Aunt Sallie's Lament
San Francisco: Chronicle 1992. [REPRINT EDITION] How to describe such a
book? This reproduction of the very limited Janus edition of 150 copies of
an artist's book is an elegant example of the wonderful synthesis between a
poet's words and a book artist's skills. The poem recounts a mountain
quilt-maker's brief summer romance with a patent medicine salesman, in the
kind of poignant and humorous way that a realistic mountain woman can speak.
Her tale is of a sorrow that has been stitched into her quilts. The book
itself is constructed to create quilt patterns as you turn the die-cut
pages, and around the edges of each page a set of words and phrases creates
a descant to the main poem. . . . yes, ah yes. My foot. The book pages are
in vivid quilt-like colors - greens, purples, reds, yellows, and the
odd-shaped book itself is housed in two interlocking slipcases which, when
slid together, create another colorful quilt square. A paper sleeve bears
the title and the quote from the poem, "He was a tonic in himself, /as quick
consumed as what/He sold in bottles, /And I was thirsty. / Yes. " New copy,
still in shrinkwrap. (I normally open shrink-wrapped books, but in this case
have not in order to protect the delicate paper sleeve.) (17.95).......$10
each. [8 available]
