The Traveler's Book Instructor Carol Todaro

Saturday & Sunday, June 13 & 14, 2009
10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Tuition schedule:
$195 general public / $165 FAU faculty and staff / $135 FAU students

Opening a book is like embarking on a trip, and this workshop will consider the artists' book as a metaphor for travel. Participants will work with their own images and ideas in combination with particular book structures to complete a travel narrative. Works can be fictional, historical, or autobiographical, or something in between. We'll pay special attention to the way that book structures can direct or alter the meaning of a book. Our goal will be to complete, in rough or finished form, one simple, single sheet pamphlet and one multi-page book. All levels.

Carol Todaro, an artist and writer, lives in Miami, Florida. Her MFA in drawing and printmaking from the University of South Florida led to her current work in the genre of artists' books. The National Museum for Women in the Arts and the Library of Congress, Washington, DC; the Jaffe Collection, Florida Atlantic University; and the Cary Graphic Arts Collection at the Rochester Institute of Technology, NY, among other public institutions, have collected her work. Her work was included the group exhibitions "The Book as Art," organized by the NMWA and traveling through 2009 and "Omniart," an urban intervention staged in downtown Miami warehouses for Art Basel Miami Beach, 2004 and 2005. "Floating World," a solo exhibition of large- scale book works, was presented in November 2002 in conjunction with Miami Book Fair International.
