[BKARTS] Degolyer 09: Spitler, Lawrence and Hanmer

The Fifth Triennial Helen Warren DeGolyer Exhibition and Bookbinding Competition opened in Dallas last week. The conference was a memorable event --The Bridwell is a beautiful venue and it was really exciting to see the creative designs submitted for the competition to bind Good Bye to a River by John Graves http://smu.edu/bridwell/degolyer/degolyer2009/

The binding commission was awarded to Priscilla Spitler

Jury Prize for Design ~~ David John Lawrence

Jury Prize for Binding ~~ Karen Hanmer

It must have been a hard choice for the jurors. All the submissions can be viewed at http://smu.edu/bridwell/degolyer/degolyer2009/contents.htm

Jim Tapley won the commission in 2006 and presented his binding at this conference. He gave a great talk on the various tools and techniques that he used for his design binding including a craft robo to cut out fine lines in leather, PVC pipe to shape the convex book spine --a la James Brockman-- this can also be used to shape the round of any book--- and more.
His binding is on display at http://smu.edu/bridwell/degolyer/degolyer2009/tapley.htm I hope they add more pics because the doublures are incredible and colorful. http://smu.edu/Bridwell/exhibits/degolyerhighlights/degolyerhighlights.htm

The exhibit will be open through July 24, 2009 at the Bridwell Library, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Regards, Olivia Primanis Ransom Center Austin, Texas
